Things to do in Wahpeton, ND/Breckenridge, MN

Head south and take your family on an adventure in the Wahpeton/Breckenridge area! Spend the morning at the Zoo, and head across the river to Breckenridge, MN to splash in their awesome water park! Plus find some great spots to eat. We’ve highlighted our favorites below. 

Chahinkapa Zoo

Address: 1004 RJ Hughes Dr, Wahpeton, ND 

Distance from Fargo: About an hour

This expansive zoo is located in Wahpeton, ND and was established in 1933.

View the large variety of animals: from zebras and monkeys, to grizzly bears and tigers.

Get up and close with the turtles and peacocks. 

Take a ride on the Prairie Rose Carousel, open Saturdays and Sundays in May and then open daily from Memorial Day through Labor Day. Hours are from 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. and cost is $2 per person.

Why we love it:

You can camp near the zoo! The Chahinkapa Zoo Campground has spots for campers, RVs, and tents. There are also two cabins available for rent. Check out their website for more information.

There is a petting zoo and a few areas where kids can feed the animals.

This zoo has lots of space for kids to roam and so many animals to see! They have a huge variety of larger animals the kids will love, including zebras, rhinos, bears, and orangutans. 

Good to know:

Open from May 14th through Labor Day from 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., and Labor Day through October from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Chahinkapa Zoo

Ticket costs are $14.75 for ages 13 and up, $10.75 for children ages 3-12, and free for those under two.

Note that Red River Valley Zoo members do not receive reciprocity at the Chahinkapa Zoo.

Restrooms are available and located behind the gift shop and near the campground (and both have changing tables).

A nursing station is located near the rhino exhibit.

Concessions are for sale at the gift shop. And no outside food or beverages are allowed.

Breckenridge Family Aquatic Center

Address: 520 13th St N, Breckenridge, MN

Distance from Fargo: About an hour

This public swimming pool is just across the river from Wahpeton in Breckenridge, MN.

Things to do:

Kids can explore a number of water features including a 28 foot water slide, other small water slides, water basketball, a splash pool with water jets, and fun fountains.

The Breckenridge Aquatic Center also has a zero level entry pool and green areas for picnicking and suntanning.

Hit up the concession stand for beverages, chips, candy, ice cream, and more.

Why we love it:

It’s a great spot for thrill seekers with multiple water slides.

Also, it’s a nice option for cooling off after a visit to the Chahinkapa Zoo.

Good to know:

Open from June 6 to August 2022, with an open swim from 1:00 – 8:00 p.m.

Children under the age of 10 must be accompanied by an adult or a legal guardian over the age of 16.

They only accept cash or check as forms of payment.

No outside food or drinks are allowed.

In the case of the inclement weather, the pool will be closed.

And there are some days that the pool will close at 5:00 p.m. for private party rentals. Please see their website for updated dates.

Where to Eat

The Wilkin

Established in 1897, this old pub is a classic spot to enjoy a warm meal and a cold drink! The owner’s hope is to “recreate the Old World Charm and rekindle the memories of good times past.” Enjoy pizza, pasta, burgers, and more at this fun family joint. 

Wahpeton Deli & Eatery

If you want the feel of an old fashioned diner, this spot is perfect for a quick lunch of all your favorites! From classic sandwiches and soup to yummy burgers, this is a spot the whole family will love. 

City Brew Hall

Another favorite with rich history, this brew hall is serving up delicious lunches with historic charm. This old city hall built in 1910 has been reimagined to serve local brews and traditional pub foods. Under the same wing as 701 Eateries and brewbird in Fargo, you know you’re getting a good meal here!
