What do you really need to pack in that hospital bag? We do so many things to prepare for baby to arrive, and this is often question that comes up for first time moms.
Here are some ideas on things to bring to get you through the whole birthing process and help you feel more comfortable.
10 Things to Pack for a Hospital Birth
1. Snacks!
Breastfeeding or not, having a baby is work.
Mama, you are going to be hungry! So, load up on all your favorite snacks (and drinks) for the times the hospital kitchen is closed.
Some ideas for healthy snacks include: coconut water (one mom told me it replenishes her when breastfeeding), pretzels, trail mix, dried fruit, meat sticks, crackers, granola bars, and protein bars.
2. Newborn Outfit or Swaddle
Bring a cute outfit for photos. To be honest, this is something that I didn’t do when my daughter was born. Her first photograph was in the hospital provided swaddle blanket.
So, please be better prepared than me and bring something cute along for photos! Whether you are having a professional photographer or just taking your own, you are going to want your baby in something nice for pictures.
3. Comfy Clothes
You will at the very least want a robe and slippers. Yes, hospitals provide gowns but they don’t give you much privacy. So, I do recommend bringing something comfortable to wear.
4. A Toiletry Bag
Although the hospital has most of the basic toiletries, they are off brand/low quality. Personally, when I gave birth, I was glad I had my own things with me. It made me somehow feel at home. Bring that favorite hair product, perfume, or toothpaste.
Also, don’t forget to pack toiletries for your significant other if they are staying overnight in the hospital with you.
5. A Going Home Outfit
Your little one will need something to wear on the way home. This one is pretty obvious. And be sure to pack a comfortable going home outfit for yourself as well.
6. An Infant Car Seat
Whether you drive or not, they will not discharge you without having this. Note — if it’s possible, don’t bring it into the hospital until the day of discharge.
7. Depends Underwear
My midwife told me about this trick, and I am ever so thankful for it. Seriously! Really beats those big bulky pads in underwear.
8. Something to Do
Books, an electronic game, a crossword puzzle, adult coloring books. Whatever that you like, you will want something to do while your baby is sleeping. Which is sporadic in the first few days (and months) of life.
9. Your Cell Phone Charger
Need I say more?
10. Lactation Supplies
If you plan on breastfeeding, it’s nice to have nursing pads with to deal with milk leakage.
Also, although hospitals provide breast pumps, it is more convenient to have your own. Especially if you are a first-time mama, because then the lactation consultants can set it up for you and show you how to use it.
