Secrets from a Professional Cleaner: 6 Simple Tips + DIY Products

Thank you to our sponsors at Above & Beyond Cleaning for sharing their cleaning expertise with us!

As the owner of Above & Beyond Cleaning Services and a busy mom to four kids and two bonus beauties, I am always looking for ways to keep my personal home space fresh as well as the homes of our clients.

Here are some tips and tricks I have learned along with some DIY cleaning product recipes!

Top 6 Home Cleaning Tips

1. Declutter first.

This makes it easier to get to the cleaning.

Kitchens and bathrooms are the most time consuming, so I suggest starting with these, then the rest will feel like a breeze.

Start by checking for expiration dates. And this is not just for food! Makeup and hair care products have expiration dates on them as well.

Bonus tip: I like to write the date I purchased them on the bottle, so I know what needs to be used up first.

2. Swap out seasonal clothes.

Wash up all that winter gear and pack it away.

Then keep only what you wear.

A great clothing hack to see what you actually wear is to hang all your hangers backward on your clothing bar. When you wear an item, return it to the rack with the hanger the right way. At the end of the season, all the clothing and hangers remaining backwards are the clothes that didn’t get worn at all.

Time to donate those!

And don’t forget to go through undergarments. Toss what needs to go and reward yourself for a job well done with new items.

3. Wash curtains and wipe down blinds with a microfiber rag.

Microfibers attract the dust and effectively lift pathogens from surfaces.

4. Use a good HEPA vacuum with attachments.

This tool will be your best friend and make your job so much easier. Use it to get the cobwebs in the corners and vacuum dust bunnies under furniture.

5. Remove the stink!

This is such an important part of cleaning.

Sprinkle baking soda on couches, mattresses, rugs, and carpets.

Let that set while you dust your ceiling fans or sanitize your gadgets (such as remotes) with rubbing alcohol wipes.

When you’re done with those little gadgets, return to vacuum all the baking soda off your surfaces.

6. Always remember to clean from top to bottom, left to right, inside, behind, and under.

This creates a system and ensures that nothing goes untouched. And don’t feel defeated if this task takes longer than expected. Work at your own pace and reward yourself for your accomplishments.

A clean home not only looks good, it can also help your health. Reducing the dust helps your respiratory system, allowing you to breathe better and reducing the clutter brings a calmer state of emotional well-being.

Fresh & Clean without the Chemicals

You can also skip the harsh chemicals when you clean. Below are some cleaning product recipes that are easy to make from more natural ingredients and simple products you likely have around the house.

I can actually clean an entire home with one product! I have also learned you don’t need a ton of fancy tools or expensive products to have a fresh, clean house.

DIY Cleaning Product Recipes

All-Purpose Cleaner
  • ¼ cup of white vinegar
  • 1 ¾ cup of water
  • 30 drops of your favorite essential oils

Combine all three ingredients.

Bathroom Cleaner
  • ¼ cup white vinegar
  • 2 ½ cups of water
  • 1 teaspoon original blue Dawn Dish Soap

This works on tough spots and soap scum as well as shower doors. The vinegar dissolves the minerals and the dish soap cuts the grime.

Tough Stain Remover
  • 2 tablespoons of hydrogen peroxide
  • 1 tablespoon of baking soda

Mix to a nice consistency.

White Grout Cleaner
  • Spray bottle of peroxide
  • Sprinkle with baking soda

Scrub with a toothbrush or denture brush and watch the foaming magic!
