Frostival & Polar Fest: Fun Outdoor Activities to Enjoy Winter!

 

Sometimes it can be hard to get outside in winter when the temperatures are dropping and the wind is whipping. But the benefits of getting outside, including lifting your mood, getting vitamin D, and boosting creativity are worth making the effort to get everyone bundled up.

Here are some fun events that are happening in our area to help you get your family outside this winter.

Frostival 2022

Days: January 10th – February 26th, 2022

Location: Various locations throughout the Fargo, Moorhead, West Fargo area

Most events are free, but a few events that require pre-registration will have a fee.

Frostival provides winter fun for the whole family! Below is a list for some of the offerings at this year’s Frostival. For a complete listing of all activities, please see the full schedule of events.

S’Mores & More

Days: January 10th

Location: Roosevelt Park

Enjoy s’mores, hot chocolate, music, and ice skating at this free event.

Snowshoe Through the Past Excursion

Days: January 13th

Location: Viking Ship Park

Take an evening hike and learn the history of the Fargo-Moorhead area. Cost is $10 per person with equipment available for rent at an extra cost.

Coloring Contest

Days: January 15th – 23rd

Location: Online/at home

Color a winter-themed coloring page for the chance to win a sled! Visit the West Fargo Parks website for more information.

Movie on Ice

Days: January 16th 

Location: The Lights, West Fargo

Watch a family-friendly movie and ice skate at The Lights. Free hot cocoa and cookies will be available while supplies last. And although this is a free event, there is a cost for skate rental. 

Silver Snowflake Search

Days: January 17th – 24th

Location: Various West Fargo locations

Hunt for silver snowflakes hidden in West Fargo. New clues will be posted daily on the West Fargo Parks website.

Bouncin’ Bash

Days: January 17th

Location: Rustad Recreation Center

Bring the kids for a day of indoor fun with inflatable games! All kids must be accompanied by an adult and the cost is $8 per child (parents are free). This event is recommended for kids age 13 and under.

S’Mores & More

Days: January 17th

Location: Clara Barton Park

Enjoy s’mores, hot chocolate, music, and ice skating at this free event.

Winter Birding Festival

Days: January 22nd 

Location: Forest River Park

Learn about birding and conservation activities at this fun, free event. Snacks and hot chocolate will be provided and this event is open to all ages/skill levels. And be sure to bring binoculars!

Cardboard Sled Races

Days: January 22nd 

Location: Mickelson Park Sledding Hill

Gather materials and make a cardboard sled to race. There is also a contest for the most creative sled.

Camp Warming House

Days: January 23rd

Location: Maplewood Park

Enjoy sledding, skating, and s’mores at this free family-friendly event. And check out the recently renovated park!

S’mores & More

Days: January 24th

Location: Longfellow Park

Get outside and have fun making s’mores, drinking hot chocolate, listening to music, and ice skating at this free event.

Winter Wildlife Excursion

Days: January 27th

Location: Viking Ship Park

Join the Red River Zoo on a hike through Viking Ship and Riverfront Park on a search for wildlife. Learn more about the footprints and habitats of animals in our region. Cost is $10 per person and registration is required. Contact Moorhead Parks & Recreation for registration and more information.

Fun at Frozen Fortress

Days: January 29th

Location: Viking Ship Park

Have some frosty fun with a variety of outdoor activities including a snow sculpture contest, free cross country ski and snowshoe rentals, a hot chocolate station, marshmallow roast, and outdoor games. Contact Moorhead Parks & Recreation for more information.

Cops & Kids Hockey Game

Days: January 30th

Location: Moorhead Sports Center

Watch this annual event where law enforcement takes on Moorhead Youth Hockey players. This fun and competitive game is free and will include a silent auction and raffle prizes. For additional information, please contact the Moorhead Police Athletics and Activities League.

S’mores & More

Days: January 31st

Location: Centennial Park

Enjoy making and eating s’mores, drinking hot chocolate, listening to music, and ice skating at this free event.

Candlelight Trail Walk

Days: February 1st

Location: Viking Ship Park

Take a scenic walk through Viking Ship Park and Mary’s Tunnel. Sit by the bonfire, enjoy food and games, or rent cross country skis or snowshoes for free. Contact Moorhead Parks & Recreation for more details.

Frost N Bowl

Days: February 5th

Location: Sunset Lanes, Moorhead

This is a family-friendly event that includes all you can bowl for $12 per person along with 20 credits ($5 worth) at the arcade.

Winter Trails Day

Days: February 5th

Location: M.B. Johnson Park

Check out a mini-clinic offered by Nature of the North and learn how to snowshoe, skishoe, or cross country ski. There will be onsite food and beverage venders. Registration is required. Contact Nature of the North for more details on the event and registration.

Sleigh Rides

Days: February 5th

Location: M.B. Johnson Park

View scenic M.B. Johnson Park on a sleigh ride. Frostival treats and refreshments will be available, the cost is $5, and registration is required. Call (218) 299-5340 for a specific time slot.

Learn. Sustain. Enjoy. Excursion

Days: February 10th

Location: Viking Ship Park

Learn more about the Red River on an interpretive hike with the River Keepers. Cost is $10 per person and registration is required. Contact Moorhead Parks & Recreation regarding registration.

A Snowy STEM Experience

Days: February 12th

Location: Maplewood Park

Try snow painting, sled engineering/testing, and a take-home craft at this family-friendly free event in West Fargo.

FrosTAKular

Days: February 12th

Location: TAK Music Venue

Check out this live concert featuring music from Broadway musicals. This is an all-ages show with a matinee and evening performance. Cost is $10 per person and tickets can be purchased on the TAK website.

Keep Me Cold in Moorhead Open Skate

Days: February 13th

Location: Cullen Hockey Center

Hit the ice for a free family open skate. Free skate rentals will be available for kids up to size 3 (while supplies last).

Sleigh Rides

Days: February 19th

Location: M.B. Johnson Park

View scenic M.B. Johnson Park on a sleigh ride. Frostival treats and refreshments will be available, the cost is $5, and registration is required. Call (218) 299-5340 for a specific time slot.

Coffee & Cocoa Crawl

Days: February 26th

Location: Downtown Fargo

Try coffee and cocoa samples from 20 local businesses!

Youth Ice Fishing Derby

Days: February 26th

Location: Woodhaven South Park & Fishing Pond

Participants can bring a fishing rod and tackle to this annual free event. South Woodhaven Pond is stocked with perch, bluegill, and northern pike. Each youth must be accompanied by a parent.

 

Polar Fest 2022

Days: February 11th- February 27th, 2022

Location: Detroit Lakes, MN (50 minutes east of Fargo)

A celebration of winter by the lake. Polar Fest includes a huge ice castle and “ice couches” that are great for photos! For more information, visit the Polar Fest website and check out their event calendar!

Freeze Your Buns Run

Days: February 12th

Location: Detroit Lakes Community Center

Preschool Polar Fest Icy Adventures

Days: February 12th

Location: Lincoln Educational Center

Explore and experiment in a wintery land at this preschool event with activities and treats. This is a free event and no registration is required.

Winter Trails Day: Learn to Snowshoe/Skishoe & Guided Wildlife Trek

Days: February 12th

Location: Detroit Mountain Recreation Center

Get an introduction to the winter activities of snowshoeing and skishoeing (a hybrid of cross-country skiing and snowshoeing) at this family-friendly event. And take a walk to look for winter wildlife.

Fandazzi Fire Circus

Days: February 12th

Location: Detroit Lakes City Park

Enjoy two fire performances near the Detroit Lakes Pavilion and Ice Castle.

Frozen Fireworks

Days: February 12th

Location: Detroit Lakes Pavilion

Free fireworks show near the lake.

Cool Kites on the Ice

Days: February 13th

Location: Detroit Lakes Pavilion

Prepare to be dazzled by kites of all shapes and sizes. And families are free to bring their own kites to fly on the lake at this free event.

Try Fat Tire Biking

Days: February 13th

Location: Detroit Mountain

Ride the groomed trails of Detroit Mountain on a fat tire bike. Basic instruction and bikes will be provided.

Snowshoe Sundays

Days: February 13th

Location: Tamarac Discovery Center, Rochert, MN

Free snowshoes provided for kids and adults! Volunteers are available for instruction and for trail recommendations.

The Great Polar Hunt

Days: February 14th – February 22nd

Location: Local Detroit Lakes businesses

Search for signs at local shops, solve puzzles, and register to win prizes. Cost is $10 for each team and registration is required.

Polar Palooza Tubing Race

Days: February 16th

Location: Detroit Mountain

Teams of four will compete on the Detroit Mountain tubing hill. Prizes will be awarded for the top three finishers and for best costume.

Laser Tubing

Days: February 18th

Location: Detroit Mountain

Tubing gets wild on Friday nights with laser lights illuminating the tubing hill. Tickets must be pre-purchased on the Detroit Mountain website.

DL Vintage Snowmobile Rally & Swap

Days: February 19th

Location: Little Detroit Lake

Check out the vintage snowmobile rally, swap, and radar run all on the frozen lake! For more information, see the Ultra Snowmobile Club website.

Snowshoe Sundays

Days: February 20th

Location: Tamarac Discovery Center, Rochert, MN

Free snowshoes provided for kids and adults! Volunteers are available for instruction and for trail recommendations.

Tubing gets wild on Friday nights with laser lights illuminating the tubing hill. Tickets must be pre-purchased on the Detroit Mountain website.

26th Annual Polar Fest Plunge

Days: February 26th

Location: Lakeside Tavern on Little Detroit

Sign up and jump in or watch this fundraiser for the Boys & Girls Club of Detroit Lakes.

Frozen Fireworks

Days: February 26th

Location: Detroit Lakes Pavilion

Free fireworks show near the lake.

Snoga in the Park

Days: February 27th

Location: Detroit Lakes City Park

Try yoga in the snow at this free event!
