Frostival & Polar Fest 2021: Fun Outdoor Activities to Enjoy Winter!


Sometimes it can be hard to get outside in winter when the temperatures are dropping and the wind is whipping. But the benefits of getting outside, including lifting your mood, getting vitamin D, and boosting creativity are worth making the effort to get everyone bundled up.

Here are some fun events that are happening in our area to help you get your family outside this winter.

Frostival 2021

Days: January 13th – February 27th, 2021

Location: Various locations throughout the Fargo, Moorhead, West Fargo area

Most events are free, but a few events that require pre-registration will have a fee.

Providing winter fun for the whole family. Below is a list for some of the offerings at this year’s Frostival. For a complete listing of all Frostival activities, please see the full schedule of events.

Silver Snowflake Search

Days: January 13th – 23rd

Location: Various West Fargo locations

Hunt for silver snowflakes hidden in West Fargo. See the West Fargo Parks website for more details. 

Coloring Contest

Days: January 13th – 22nd 

Location: Online/at home

Entries for the West Fargo Park District’s 2021 Frostival Coloring Contest will be accepted on the Coloring Contest Facebook page until Friday, January 22 at 12:00 PM. Print off the coloring sheet at If you do not have a printer, participants can Create A Winter Scene on any blank piece of paper!

Scavenger Hunt

Days: January 16th – February 27th

Location: Various Fargo locations

A six week long scavenger hunt with challenges to complete to earn points. Check out the Frostival website to download the app used to participate.

S’Mores & More

Days: January 18th from 5:00-7:00 p.m.

Location: Clara Barton Park

Enjoy s’mores, hot chocolate, music, and ice skating.

Cardboard Sled Races

Days: January 23rd from 10:00-11:30 a.m.

Location: Mickelson Sledding Hill

Create a cardboard sled to race in this free event. Registration is completed onsite.

Movie on Ice

Days: January 23rd from 1:00-7:00 p.m.

Location: The Lights

Enjoy a movie on the big screen along with fire pits and an open skate. There will be various sessions and while this event is free, pre-registration is required.

Uniquely Fargo: Color Clash

Days: January 23rd from 3:00-4:00 p.m.

Location: Rheault Farm

This is a snowball fight with a Hunger Games theme. Pre-registration is required and cost is $15 per person.

S’Mores & More

Days: January 25th from 5:00-7:00 p.m.

Location: Longfellow Park

Enjoy s’mores, hot chocolate, music, and ice skating.

Frozen Fortress

Days: January 30th from 11:00 a.m. -3:00 p.m.

Location: Hjemkomst Center

A day of outdoor events and activities with a snow sculpture competition, free cross country ski and snowshoe rentals, a marshmallow roast, and outdoor games.


Days: January 30th from 12:00-1:00 p.m. (registration at 11:45 a.m.)

Location: Hjemkomst Center, Viking Ship Park

Yoga in the snow, a free event.

Dance Attack

Days: January 30th from 1:15- 2:00 p.m. (registration at 1:00 p.m.)

Location: Hjemkomst Center, Viking Ship Park

This free event is a 45-minute fitness dance party for all age and abilities.

Sleigh Rides

Days: January 31st from 12:00- 4:00 p.m.; February 6th from 12:00-4:00 p.m.

Location: M.B. Johnson Park

Sleigh rides through the park. Cost is $5 for person, children under two are free. Call (218) 299-5296 to reserve tickets and a certain time slot. Tickets will be available onsite, but will be limited due to capacity restrictions.

S’Mores & More

Days: February 1st from 5:00- 7:00 p.m. 

Location: Centennial Park

Enjoy s’mores, hot chocolate, music, and ice skating.

Candlelight Trail Walk

Days: February 2nd from 5:00- 8:00 p.m. 

Location: Hjemkomst Center, Viking Ship Park

A scenic stroll through the trail lit with hundreds of luminaries. Followed by a bonfire, food, and games.

Keep Me Cold in Moorhead Open Skate

Days: February 7th from 1:00-3:00 p.m.

Location: Cullen Hockey Center

This is a free open skate for the entire family.

Coffee & Cocoa Crawl

Days: February 13th from 9:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m.

Location: Downtown Fargo

Shopping and sipping in the heart of downtown.

Winter Trails Day

Days: February 13th from 10:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m.

Location: M.B. Johnson Park

Clinics will be offered for snowshoeing, cross country skiing, and ski shoeing. Free rentals will be provided and registration for the clinics is required.

Winter Wonderland with EHP Performance

Days: February 13th from 12:00 p.m.-4:00 p.m.

Location: EHP Performance

This family-friendly event will have kids events like an obstacle course, sled pull contest, hot chocolate, s’mores, snowmobile rides, and outdoor bowling.

Youth Ice Fishing Derby

Days: February 27th from 1:30 p.m.-3:30 p.m.

Location: South Woodhaven Pone

Kids bring their own rods for this ice fishing contest.


Polar Fest

Days: February 4th- February 15th, 2021

Location: Detroit Lakes, MN (50 minutes east of Fargo)

A celebration of winter by the lake. Polar Fest includes a huge ice castle and “ice couches” that are great for photos! For full schedule, visit the Polar Fest website

Outdoor Skating & Warming House

Days: February 4th-February 15th, hours vary

Location: People’s Park

Tubing After Dark: Laser Tubing

Days: February 12th from 5:00 p.m.-8:00 p.m.

Location: Detroit Mountain

Have fun tubing after dark with the proceeds going to a good cause, Ski Angel

Freeze Your Buns Run

Days: February 13th at 8:00 a.m.

Location: Detroit Lakes Community & Cultural Center

A fun 5K winter run. Registration is required.

Kool Kites on the Lake

Days: February 14th, time TBA

Location: Little Detroit Lake, near the Pavilion

Giant kites will be flown by four professional kite flyers. Families can bring their own kites or pick up kites from the Detroit Lakes Community & Cultural Center to decorate. Prizes will be awarded to the highest flying kite and also most creative.
